Prilosec or omeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor while Zantac or ranitidine is an H1 blocker. Both have proven to be effective in acid-peptic disease by decreasing the production of acid. Ranitidine is usually initiated as first-line therapy and if required[persisting symptoms],omeprazole is advised as this has a more stronger acid-supression effect.

Although prilosec and zantac are both known to work very well, i only have experience with using prilosec. Prilosec does work well and i recommend it.

personally i have tken both and i like zantac better. it seems to work faster and longer. zantac also comes in more Mgs and better flavors.

Zantac seems to work best with GERD symptoms that occur during the night. Whereas, Prilosec targets those same symptoms that occur during the day.

As a nurse I can tell you I have seen one work better than the other for different individuals. There does not seen to be a factor involved in this I would get a 30 Day supply and if it works stick with it, if not try the other brand.

Both medications are on the market because they work, so the real answer is whichever one seems to work best for you. Try them out and decide for yourself.

Zantac is useful for mild indigestion or for occasional stomach problems. If your stomach problems are more severe, prilosec may be more helpful to you.
