Argumentative writing involves expressing a direct viewpoint about a topic, and setting out to prove why this viewpoint is more correct than others. It involves creating entensive reasons as to why the writer's viewpoint should be accepted, along with proper use of inductions and propositions. One famous example is Patrick Henry's "Give me Liberty or give me Death" speech.

Argumentative writing states its thesis, and then supports it with a combination of facts and logic. Writing textbooks and websites often have examples. Legal decisions and policy papers are good examples of argumentative writing. The Federalist Papers, written at the time the US was formed, are examples of extended arguments. Many speeches are rhetorical more than argumentative.
