A stationary point of a function y=f(x) is a value of x for which the derivative is zero. For smooth functions, a point which is the maximum or minimum in its neighborhood is always a stationary point. However, not all stationary points are maximum or minimum values. The concept is easily extend to functions of more than one variable.
