gargle with salt water, stay away from very hot or very cold foods, buy something at the store for gums that are inflamed, try putting ice on them, or ask your dentist what he would recommend.

Inflammation is a sign of infection; whatever work you had done allowed some of the microbes in your mouth better access to your gum tissue (maybe because of scratches) and your immune system is fighting them off. You can help it along with a disinfectant like Listerine. If it persists longer than a few days, go back to your dentist.

The best treatment is to rinse with salt water which will remove the swelling followed rinsing with a slight peroxide solution to prevent infection.

Having sore gums after visiting the dentist can a pain. The best cure is prevention by flossing daily and preventing the build up of plaque. For current soreness, it may be helpful to take a mild pain reliever and eat soft foods for a day to allow for healing.

Ice or anything cold, like ice cream, will bring the swelling down. Cold generally brings inflammation down. You could also take some tylenol, or advil, too.
