You could make a natural acidic soloution. Pouring vinegar on grass will kill it. The great thing about this "poison" is that it is not actually poison per say. Rain water will carry it away safely.

Boiling water or Apple Cider Vinegar they will both kill grass usually within twenty four hours and niether one will harm the soil in any way. They will kill everything else they get on as well so be careful if you have something you want to save when you are doing the application.

I would spray the lawn with weed killer, in the brightest part of the day, it is a sure way to kill the foilage but cause no harm to the soil.

Use a rototiller to turn up the soil. This is a really good option especially if you are going to replant your lawn later. Or you can put pavers down.

First you can put japaneese bettles in your yard so that they kill it. then use poision to kill the beetles. then do what you want with the dead stuff. then ask your nebors to help you put in some turf. (only if that is what you intended to do

If you are going to be spreading a light layer of topsoil over the lawn then simply mow the lawn with mower deck all the way down.
