What happens after an abnormal AFP screening?

My doctor said my results were not normal.

Since this is just a screening test, your doctor will still conduct a diagnostic test following this to ensure that the results are valid because it is known that such screening has a possibility of bringing a false-positive result. Through a more comprehensive diagnostic test, your doctor will then be able to determine if your baby has neural tube defects.

Abnormal levels of AFP indicate a higher risk for problems such as spina bifida and Down's syndrome. Other tests, including chorionic villus sampling and amniocentesis, can diagnose chromosomal disorders. Talk to your doctor, and good luck!

You will likely have an ultrasound to look for potential genetic defects. Your doctor may also recommend an amnio - taking a small amount of amniotic fluide from your uterus to test for more specific issues than the AFP blood tests can do.

You have a choice to make. If you don't want to raise a child with an abnormality you will have to choose if you want to terminate the pregnancy or not. If you can deal with it then you keep the baby.
