Thats the drive mode, you have a manumatic option which allows you to switch between automatic, and manual shifting. The other option would be a gas saving mode.

The mode light coming on is generally a bad module in the transmission. If the light comes on and stays on when you start the vehicle chances are you wont be moving until the light goes off when the light is on low gears will not work.

The mode light refers to the overdrive on your automatic transmission. There is a button, on the shifter, that allows you to turn on or off the overdrive. The overdrive is a fourth gear and helps you get better mileage. You should probably leave it on all of the time.

The S mode light is used to indicate a transmission issue. If the light stay on you need to check for codes. The TCU may be bad if the light doesn't stay on. Jumper the pins on the transmission control unit an count the flashes to find the trouble code.
