This is not an unusual thing to happen. If it is early in the first trimester the fetus is smaller than a thumb, and can be difficult to find. It the later trimesters, the baby can simpily be in an unusual position.

It probably just means that the first time they looked for fetal heartbeat, they couldn't find the right spot. Since they did find a heartbeat the second time they tried, it sounds like your baby is fine and was just hiding the first time! However, if you are concerned, you could check with your doctor.

That just might mean that the baby was in an odd position in the womb and they couldn't find it.

It means that the first time they checked they were either using the machine incorrectly or you were too early in the pregnancy for them to detect the heart beat.

At the very beginning of pregnancy, often the heart hasn't started yet. Otherwise, the baby could just be moving a lot, making it difficult to find.
