On cold wilderness nights it was sleep with dogs or freeze. One dog meant that you and he were still master and dog. A three dog night meant that you were willing to be outnumbered by a dog pack to survive. Double dare is two dogs, a serious challenge.

When a child says to another child "I dare you" (to do something) and the second answers "I double-dare you," it's a childish way of saying "I dare you more. "
