In the beginning, about 1875, G. O. P. stood for Gallant Old Party, but soon, Grand Old Party became the accepted meaning for the acronym. In 1874, cartoonist Thomas Nash depicted Democrats as a donkey, trying to scare an elephant, so the elephant as the symbol for the Republican Party was born.

It means "Grand Old Party. " The Republican party enjoyed dominance in the federal government for many years after the Civil War, so they became the "old party. " Originally, it was the "Gallant Old Party" but later it became "grand" due to their size.
