The Fifth Amendment protects an US citizen from being forced to testify in court about anything that may be incriminating to himself. The amendment also prevents the government from taking away specific rights (regarding life, liberty, and property) given to its citizens through the Constitution.

The Fifth Amendment means that you cannot be forced to incriminate yourself in a criminal case. It also protects your property from being taken from you for use by the public, without a satisfactory payment.

The Fifth Amendment guarantees due process, basic rights in criminal proceedings, the right to refuse to testify against one's self, no double jeopardy (tried twice for same crime), and an eminent domain clause that says you must be compensated for your property the government takes for public use.
