What does "absence makes the heart grow fonder" mean?

It means that when someone or something is away from you for a long time, you grow to love it even more. The phrase has its origins with the Roman poet Sextus Propertius, who said "love's tide stronger flows" toward lovers who are absent. An 1832 publication carries a more modern version.

It comes from when someone in your life leaves for a vacation or whatnot. When they come back your love gets stronger. You haven't seen them in a long time so it feels like you just met all over again.
