Linguistics in the study or the science of language. A student of linguistics would be person that is studying the science of langauge, or the semantics of language. How sounds are made, what part of the mouth, tongue, air flow ect. are used to correct sound for the word and language.

The term "student of linguistics" means that a person is a student of languages. There are many minors and majors offered in different language offered by most university, so being a linguistic student is very possible and lucrative. It's very pleasant to have someone trying to learn your language because that the best way to break a cultural barrier.
