A starter capacitor is a small metallic normally cylindrical item that has a purpose of collecting and storing energy until needed. The capacitor was mostly used in early model cars but has been largely replaced with todays high tech electronics. Capacitors are not only used in cars but also everyday electronic devices.

It acts like an additional battery for running the high amp draw of the starter. These are usually found in old cars, not new ones at all.

A Starter Capacitor holds extra energy and puts it to the starter when it is engaged to help the starter be cycled on and off.

Like most other capacitors the starter capacitor is used to store a large amount of electricity. In the case of a starter motor this electricity is used to turn a small motor. Which in turn spins the engine.

Starter capacitors create the necessary torque to start an electric motor via an "energy delay". This occurs by shifting voltage from one winding to another, therefore creating and imbalance in energy and starting the motor. So basically the capacitor is responsible for assigning the "timing" of the current.
