What do you include in empathy statements?

Can I just say "I understand?"

It depends on what the situation is. If someone has lost a person or a job, you could include statements such as, "I know what you're going through must be hard" or "Let me know if there is anything I can do to help." Sometimes I simply tell someone that things will get better.

That's a great start although it may seem trite to an intelligent person, or quickly be disbelieved by anyone, so mix it up a bit, but most of all, just learn to say what you're actually feeling about the situation, the person, or what they just told you about. Good luck.
