What do you do when there is a lawsuit against you?

I think I'm still just shocked.

First, I would find out what the lawsuit was about. Is it a criminal or a civil suit? I would definitely try to get over my "shock" and get a good but affordable lawyer to defend my case. If it is a criminal suit then expense is a non-issue, I would get the best attorney in town.

In most cases you contact you ronsurance company. If it involves your car then your car insurance will cover you and pay for an attorney to represent you. If not your car, then perhaps your home owners insuracne will apply.

They should have sent you paperwork in the mail or have contacted you via telephone. The lawyers will ask you questions and if it's not to the point of a Court date yet they may put you on a payment plan or let you offer a Settlement value. If you cannot arrange payments or settle then they will sue.

The first thing you need to do is hire an attorney. Then you will need to get a copy of all the documents that were filed in court to see what was put against you in order to figure out the best way to proceed with the case. Good luck.

If the lawsuit is for unpaid debt, find the paper statements that show what you actually owe and have paid.
