Eye strain is caused by overusing the muscles of the eyes. They become tired, and need a rest. Eye strain is often caused by doing "close work," or looking at things that are close to the eye. While resting the eyes is a good idea, avoiding eyestrain is better. Vary your visual tasks, and get glasses if you need them.

Rest your eyes as much as possible. Take breaks from reading and any close eye work. Close your eyes for a few seconds at a time throughout the day. If you work on computers, make sure you avert your eyes from the screen every so often. Avoid fluorescent lighting.

Eye strain can be relieved by doing the opposite of what you are doing while getting the strain. If you are reading, stop and look at distance for awhile.

Try to limit the number of hours per day that you perform activities that strain your eyes. Try to limit your time on the computer, and get an eye exam.
