What do cristae do in mitochondria?

Cristae are chambers formed within the inner membrane of mitochondria. They contain proteins and various membrane-bound hemoproteins. They increase the area in which chemical reactions can occur within the mitochondria. This enables oxidative metabolism to take place.

Provide a large surface area for the electron transport chain and the ATP synthase which are all located in these folds of the inner membrane. hope this helps you out
