What did medieval monks do?

I know they wrote music, but what else?

Medieval monks wrote music, and chanted. They grew vegetables. They brewed bear. They baked. They transcribed or copied books. Many of the first libraries were basically hand-crafted by monks. They also took alms or charity, accepted travelers, and sought answers to questions about their faith.

One of their most important jobs included working in the scriptorium where written works were written and translated. They also grew their own food and did their own building.

Generally controlled the lives of "peasants" around the monastery. They were the authority figures of any given village, but they obeyed any member of the clergy who held more authority.
