Garrett A. Morgan (1877-1963) was a famous African-American inventor. He is recognized for many inventions, including a form of traffic signal and a "safety hood" (like a gas mask), the latter of which he used to rescue two workers from a gas-filled tunnel in 1916 after an explosion. He created practical instruments for public and private use - most famously, the precursor to the gas mask, which would come in handy on battlefields and in industrial use. Morgan was an African-American who lived from the mid-1800s - mid-1900s. His inventions included the traffic light; perhaps not so ironically, he began his career as a handyman.
