Bacteria from eating something old to parasitic worms can cause diarrhea. If a day or two of modifying the diet by decrease of fat intake or giving small amounts of water do not work, also consider feline leukemia virus in which case the cat needs to checked by a veterinarian.

If you are giving your cat wet food, this could cause it. Changing foods is another problem (do so slowly). Also, worms commonly cause loose stools, as well as other parasites and certain illnesses. Additionally, it may simply be something your cat ate; milk is commonly a culprit in this.

Your cat may have stomach discomfort or may be ingesting too much water both of which can cause loose stools. Too much fiber may also be the culprit.

A common cause of loose stool in cats is changes in the cat's diet. If you do need to change the cat's food, do it slowly over a few days.
