Bangkok is the best city to visit in Thailand; it's a gateway to every other city in Thailand, and other cities in Southeast Asia. Bangkok has amazingly cheap accommodation. It's easy to get around by taxi or tuk-tuk (motorized rickshaw.) If you stay in backpacker area of khaosan, your hotel will have a long list of daytrips you can do.
