Yellow fingernails are mainly caused by a vitamin deficiency and general malnutrition. Fingernails are extremely sensitive to changes in the body's chemistry. The fingernails are also closely-related to respiration, with the "pink" part of the nail becoming cloudy when oxygen levels are low.

Yellow fingernails could come from a vitamin deficiency, but I really don't think so. I think it is just a fungus. Go to a doctor and get checked out. Sometimes a heavy smoker gets yellow fingernails.
