Wear, age(cracking or shrinkage), or putting too much oil in sometimes blows them out. Once it starts leaking, the best thing to do is replace it. If the car is older, other seals might need fixing too. Somethimes leaks can be slowed down or stopped by after market oil additives.

Well it can be cause by a few things. Older gaskets where made of brittle material and can degrade and dry out over time. It a car sits for a long time it can damage the seal. If the pressure in the engine gets to great a seal can leak.

There are a few reason why a engine seal can fail. The most common one being old age. Engine seals are made of flexible rubber that can harden and crack as they get older. This process is accelerated when the engine sits without running. Seals also can go bad when the engine overheats or debris makes it's way into seal.

if factory installed it could be just old age, maybe worn bearings. If it was just replaced and still leaking defective replacement part, variations in the block assembly, improperly installed
