Respiratory distress can have a number of causes: emphysema (which is caused by smoking or exposure to other noxious chemicals), certain types of heart failure (which can cause the lungs to fill with fluid), respiratory infection (in which the body's immune system can fill the lungs with mucous), and being out of shape and trying to exercise excessively.

One reason is over-exertion or too much exercise. Pneumonia could cause shortness of breath. Smoking could cause chronic labored breathing. Emphysema could cause breathing problems. Congestive heart failure is another cause. An allergy would cause problems. Very cold air could cause a person to have trouble breathing. Toxic waste or an explosion could be an unusual cause.
