What causes high muscle enzymes?

The high level of enzymes in the cytoplasm of the muscles can cause inflammation or rheumatism due to liver problems, alcohol consumption or stress to muscle tissues and other disorders or toxicity, or even hereditary problems.

High muscle enzymes can be caused by certain medications, most notably statin medications for lowering cholesterol. Heavy exertion or kidney problems could also be a cause.

Breakdown of the muscle can result in release of tryponin, a major muscle enzyme. Their release is dangerous in that it indicates that something serious is occuring.
