High liver enzymes are commonly associated with hepatitis. There are different forms of hepatitis and treatment varies depending on time. With these viral infections the liver enzymes are usually very high. Lower elevations can be caused by alcohol consumption. Autoimmune hepatitis can also cause liver enzymes to increase. Lastly, several medications can affect the liver and raise enzyme levels.
