When training for a forty yard dash you must build up your stamina, endurance, and speed. Build up your cardio by doing running, sprinting, jump ropes, etc. You can also practice running a 40 yard dash to increase your speed over time.

You want to build up explosive speed, so in the weight room do leg presses and calf raises. On the field run 80 yard dashes for 2 weeks, then drop down to the 40 yard dash. It will seem the 40 yards are that much smaller.

You can try running the 40 with a weighted vest or , if you have one nearby , running the 40 up a hill. Another idea would be to have a friend trailing you and pulling on a rope tied to a harness or around you giving resistance. Anything that will strenghten your legs and core muscles.

In training for my high school track team we applied various techniques to improve our completion times. In regards to a 40 yard dash I would suggest a three teired approach. Try running the distance on three different medium. I would suggest sand/soft ground, shallow water, and a slight incline for a couple weeks prior to competition.
