You can try using liquid bluing/laundry blue (often sold under the name Mrs. Stewart's Bluing in the laundry aisle of the grocery store. ) Added to the rinse water, it will give yellowed or grayed white fabrics a blue cast, which makes them appear whiter. Follow the directions on the bottle.

Run them through the laundry with bleach and a whitening detergent. Use a stain stick or other stain remover for especially dingy spots, like collars, cuffs, underarms, and stained spots.

Presoak them with a stain-treating product such as Oxyclean, then wash them in hot water. If they still aren't white enough, wash them again, using one cup of bleach added to the wash cyle according to the directions for you washer. Some stains can't be removed, so you might have to throw out some items.

You should use the hottest water that the clothes can stand without shrinking for dingy white clothes and a detergent that contains enzyme cleaning agents. Soaking overnight in distilled white vinegar or in Cascade dishwasher detergent before washing can help as well.
