What can I do about my three-year-old son who is very clingy?

I would try to ease him into independent play. When he is playing with something quietly you can go do something else in another room. It is good to let him know where you are but understand that it is also ok to be alone or with a friend.

You can provide him with more opportunities to be with out you such as if you can have someone watch him while you run short errands. This will show him that you will always come back for him and there is no reason for him to cling to you.

This is probably just a phase. He will eventually grow out of it. However, you can do things in order to help him come out of it sooner. Try leaving him with someone while you do errands so he becomes less Dependent of you.
