The most common (and often only) symptom of vitiligo is decreased pigmentation of areas of skin, which shows externally as white patches. The decreased pigmentation is caused by the death or decreased functioning of melanocytes. Vitiligo is an autoimmune disease, and is thus not contagious.

Vitiligo is an autoimmune disease that causes areas of your skin to lose its pigment. It is not at all contagious. However, it is a condition that tends to run in families.

Symptoms include pigment loss (depigmentation), whitening of facial hair (eyebrows, lashes, beard, etc.), loss of color in mouth lining tissue (mucous membranes) and loss or change in color of the inner layer of the eye (retina). The first parts of the body that normally show signs first are the hands, arms, feet, face and lips. No, vitiligo is not contagious.
