The symptoms usually noticed first by owners are weight loss, excessive drinking, and more frequent urination. Cats will also sometimes urinate outside the litter box as diabetes can cause bladder infections. A cat walking on his hocks is also an indication of diabetes.

Like in humans, warning symptoms of diabetes in cats generally include noticeable weight loss, increased appetite, excessive thirst and frequent urination. Cats suffering with undiagnosed diabetes long term may also exhibit additional symptoms such as general weakness and lethargy, vomiting, rapid breathing and foul acetone-like breath.

Symptoms can include weight loss, excessive thirst, altered appetite (sometimes increased but generally decreased), lower activity levels than normal, and poor quality of skin and coat. Vomiting and depression can also be symptoms. When taken to a vet, blood tests and urine tests will be done to check glucose levels.

The cat will have an increase in its appetite and thirst. It will suffer weight loss and use the bathroom more. Older cats and overweight cats are more susceptible.
