One school of thought lists these six: Listening. Maintaining eye contact. Repeating the question to clarify. Using common language understood by all involved. Speaking clearly. Using appropriate body language. The six stages are also written as: hearing, attending, understanding, remembering, evaluating, and responding.

There are six basic stages of the listening process: hearing, attending, understanding, remembering, evaluating, and responding. While these stages occur in sequence, they are usually performed in rapid succession and the performer is not necessarily aware of these stages. Some authors identify four stages of the listening process, including attending, interpreting, responding, and remembering.

The six stages of listening: hearing (sound waves hit the ear drums), attending (brain filters various sound stimuli), understanding (selected stimuli are interpreted into meaningful information), remembering (information stored), evaluating (the listener logically weighs information and makes a judges it), and responding (verbal or non-verbal cues back to the speaker).
