First make sure that your tank is properly set up and has run for at least 24 hours. Then you can let your fish float in the tank inside the bag they came in. After about 20 minutes they will have adjusted. They can now be released into the tank, make sure to add the water from the bag.

First off test your water! you can buy test for ph and acid in the water at your local pet store. once they are both where they should be, put the fish in the water in plastic bags also filled with water. let them sit for a good 20 minutes, to acclimate them to the new water temp. then release!

In order to perform the task safely after you fill the tank about 90% full you need to add conditioning tablets to rid the water of the toxic chlorine that could kill your fish. You will also need a heater to bring the water within the temperature range needed by the particular species of fish you have.

You must be sure the new fish are compatible with existing fish. For example you would never put a guppy in the same tank as a piranha!
