A microscope makes things that are extremely small visible to the human eye. It serves no purpose other than to magnify the size of very, very small things. The light in the microscope can be used to kill very small creatures, which is usually an unwanted side-effect.

A 2-dimensional microscope's function is to be able to see more detail of small objects by magnifying them. More advanced microscopes, such as scanning electron microscopes, can help create visualizations for objects that cannot be detected by humans.

It depends on the microscope you are using. Other microscope have special parts to have other functions including making things look bigger. Electron Microscope are used for spectroscopy in which it analyze the chemical composition of the sample material. For optical microscopes, are use to observe stress pattern in the certain material.
