Track money received. Record expenses and their category. Pay bills in a timely manner. Many accountants file tax returns for the companies that they work for. They may collect payroll taxes from employees and send the necessary forms and payments to the IRS on a monthly basis. They send monthly sales tax receipts to the state.

Most duties of an accountant include managing and possibly over seeing the funds of a person or business. They deal with money coming in and going out for an individual or business. Balance the books and make budgets. Some accountants will choose and handle investments with the clinet's money as well, and possibly do their taxes too.

They track the flow of money in an organization. This can be accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll payments, payroll deductions, paying payroll taxes or calculating taxes for the business. It may be calculating the costs of a contract and lifetime cost of a product's life-cycle. It may involve activity based costing to determine the profit margin per product.

An accountant's duties range based on whether they are in practice, i.e., an auditing or accounting firm, or whether they are working for a commercial organisation as their accountant. In all cases, accountancy requires study, and continuing professional development. ACCA is just one of the bodies that provides examinations for accountants in the UK, there are several others.
