This depends on your state, or even your town or county jurisdiction. Many are very behind on this law and will not allow you a restraining order if this is not a domestic issue- if this is the case, go to your Prosecutor's office and be ADAMANT about getting help.

There are three kinds of restraining orders: an emergency protective order (EPO) that lasts a week, a temporary restraining order for up to 30 days, and a permanent restraining order that lasts for the period set by the judge.
