In children, a hernia in the belly button area may occur. Rarely does this cause any issues for a child but this condition may require emergency surgery if pain or redness develops in the stomach area, cries frequently, and is throwing up.

Diastasis recti is the separation of the left and right side of the rectus abdominal muscle which covers the front of the abdomin. It is common is newborns especially when premature. It can also occur in pregnant women. It usually heals on its own without treatment. Rarely a hernia forms.
