Especially if this is your first pregnancy, some babies seem to want to take their time. Nine months would average out to 38 weeks, so a baby that comes at 40 weeks is just 2 weeks late. That happens frequently. Your doctor will help you figure out the due date.

The chances of carrying a baby until 40 weeks depend upon your individual circumstances but for an average normal pregnancy it is fairly common. More common is to carry to between 36 and 38 weeks, however, it really depends on your pregnancy and health more than anything.

Forty Weeks is just a rough date. It's perfectly normal to have your child either at thirty eight weeks or at forty weeks. Most have them closer to thirty eight.

the chances are very bleak, as after 9 months are over the placenta tends to break away from the uterus and detach itself. So now the baby needs to survive on its own, without the support of the mothers body. There are very few people who carry for that long.
