The main benefit for a self propelled mower is that you simply have to walk behind it instead of manually pushing it around. Your mowing will generally take less time, and look better because the mower will travel at it's own pace instead of yours.

Self propelled lawn mowers are nice if your yard has thick grass it is bumpy or you have an incline in your yard. The self propelled means that the wheels will turn for you and help you move the lawn mower through the yard a lot easier. I have one and I think it is worth the extra money.
