The most basic thing about quilting is cutting out geometric patterns of cloth and then sewing them together in different ways. I would suggest taking a quilt to your grandma and have her explain the pieces. Before you know it, you'll be quilting away.

Basically, quilting in when you sew together fabric squares or scraps to make one large piece. It can be done by hand or machine and is a great way to pass time. If it is your first time quilting, purchasing quilting squares takes the measuring out of the task and introduces you to this hobby.
