Sometimes there is redness, warmth, swelling, and pain or discomfort over a vein. Some people report a red line which moves away from the swollen area. You may also have a low grade fever. Phlebitis usually comes on rather slowly and requires medical intervention.

This is usually from a i.v. site while the person was in the hospital. The vein will feel warm and hard and the area will be red. See a doctor.

When it's difficult to distinguish between your ankles and your calves, they are too swollen. That can be phlebitis. Poor circulation as a result of little exercise or standing too long on hard floors can cause this. Also, skin discoloration ( I believe splotchy, sort of purple) can be another symptom.

Phlebitis is the clotting of veins nearer the surface of your skin rather than deep veins. You might have swelling, heat where you feel the pain, and of course pain. See someone immediatly.

Usually a slow onset of a tender red area along the superficial veins on skin. A long, thin red area may be inflammation following the path of a superficial vein.
