electronics. Many VW's have problems passing emissions constantly. The sensors seem to go bad at any opportunity. excessive heat can crack the turbine housing and require a rebuild/ weld repair. If it is oil cooled, the cooling system can also deteriorate.

I've worked on a large number of the the Jetta and Golf turbos. Generally, the problems exist in one main category: electronics. Many VW's have problems passing emissions constantly. The sensors seem to go bad at any opportunity.

Volkswagen turbos have a reputation for problems but most are not serious. Usually a vacuum hose is loose or leaking or something similar is wrong. When the driver increases speed the ECU recognizes something is wrong and puts the vehicle into limp home mode.

As with any turbo, excessive heat can crack the turbine housing and require a rebuild/ weld repair. If it is oil cooled, the cooling system can also deteriorate.

In general turbocharged engines develop reliability problems after a few years and can be very expensive to maintain. The turbo fluid must be changed at least twice a year and checked to make sure it's not low.
