Leprosy is caused by the bacteria mycobacterium leprae. It normally takes three to five years after obtaining the bacteria that a person starts to see symptoms. Leprosy normally effects skin and peripheral nerves, so a person affected could suffer from muscle weakness, fatigue, skin rashes, vision problems, loss of fingers and toes.

The main external sign of leprosy is skin lesions and thickened skin patches. As it progresses, numbness can occur and tissue loss causes fingers and toes to become deformed. Leprosy also affects the mucous membranes resulting in nosebleeds.
