One big symptom is if your dog is limping. Another symptom is if your dog wines or pulls away when you touch their leg.

Your pet will favor the leg, there will be swelling, and you may be able to feel heat at the sprain site. Make sure this isn't a symptom of a more serious issue like dysplasia or arthritis- dogs don't often get sprains unless they suffer an accident or fall, or twist resisting being tied or restrained- please consult your vet.

The most common symptom is the dog will be limping or won't be putting weight on the sprained leg. The dog will most likely be acting uncomfortable and won't want to walk around as much. If the dog isn't showing any of these symptoms, either it can't feel the sprain or there isn't a sprain.

Canine leg sprain is a common ailment among the sled dogs of the Iditerod. If the dog cringes at the sight of a sled or starts whining around frozen salmon a sprain is a distinct possibility. If none of these tests are available then massage the suspect leg and if the dog tries to take your face off you know.
