The most obvious sign of bad piston rings is excessive oil consumption. When rings go bad, oil can seep into the combustion chamber from the crankcase, and then the engine will burn the oil. If your engine is using a lot of oil but not leaking, the piston rings are probably worn.

You can tell if your piston rings are bad if you see blue or black smoke coming from the exhaust every time you accelerate your vehicle. Also, your engine oil will be used up much more quickly if your piston rings are bad. If you check you engine dipstick, you can see how much oil is used.

An engine with worn rings will burn oil, have low compression, and may smoke. Blowby past the rings can pressurize the crankcase and cause the oil seals to leak. In severe cases, the engine will be hard to start and won't make much power

For instance there can be a black cloud of burnt oil coming out of the exhaust. Often this effect is followed by a bad noise.

Well if you have access to a compression checker then you should check each cylinder. If the rings are bad they will lose pressure quickly. Another sign is oil in the exhaust and oil plugs. You may also get gas in the oil.

The biggest sign is if you do a compression test and you have very little. An oil burning issue may also be a sign that the rings aren't sealing right.

Well you should do a compression test to make sure the rings aren't leaking. If they are you will slowly loose pressure. If you have a lot of blue smoke in the exhaust or are losing oil and see no leak then that may be more signs of bad rings.

Check for blueish smoke... Perform a dry and wet compression test. The wet compression test will give you the most information because if the compression goes up compared to the dry compression test you should be sure its a bad ring.
