A broken thumb may be recognized by swelling, bruising, severe pain, or deformity of the finger. Movement may be difficult. Definitive diagnosis will involve an x-ray of the hand.

The thumb will probably be deformed. Your thumb may be severely bruised and hard, if not impossible, to bend. You will probably have intense pain for at least a few days. Is your thumb cold to the touch? Sometimes broken bones will feel cold around the break or the whole finger may be cold.

Deformity of the digit, redness, pain and or swelling are all signs of a broken thumb. There may be a feeling of "crunching" known as crepitus when the thumb is moved. Inability to use the thumb is another good indicator. If you suspect that the thumb is broken, please have it assessed by a physician.

An inability to bend the thumb at all, accompanied by extreme pain and tenderness. Generally there will be bruising and swelling around the area of the break but it could be around the whole thumb as well.

A broken thumb can be detected by swelling and brusing to the area as well as the inability to move the thumb without pain shooting through out the hand and possible arm.
