Question by  GEETZ (388)

What are some reflective listening techniques?

My therapist told me to work on this when speaking to my daughter. Does it even really help?

When your daughter says something, re-word it and ask it back to her. This is a way of understanding what she is saying. It does help to make things clear.

Reflective Listening requires repeating the words said by the subject in order to make them feel like they are being listened to. It involves creating a feeling of empathy and trust between the person speaking and the person listening. By repeating the words, sometimes in another way, the speaker should feel better about themselves.

People of all ages need to know they are being heard, so yes it helps. Repeat back what your daughter says in an interested and fascinated tone.

Reflective listening will let your daughter know that you're sincerely listening to her and you're interested in what she has to say. It works very well. When she's talking, use some the words and phrases that she in your response. As for specifics when she talks about problems at schools - remember names and the classes that she's in.
