Check out "Curse Tablets and Binding Spells from the Ancient World" by John Gager for details on spells and curses and their origin. It's educational and will give you a lot of background on how spells and curses came about. You might also be interested in "The Little Book of Curses and Maledictions for Everyday Use" by Dawn Rae Downton.

That would be Utterly Wicked, subtitled Curses, Hexes and other unsavory notions by Dorothy Morrison. Good background and practical matters on the subject.
