What are some pregnancy massage contraindications?

Beyond the first trimester you shouldn't lay on your stomach on a massage table, avoid specialized face down massage tables for pregnant women, these can cause placenta detachment. You should also avoid reflexology, and pressure points around the feet and ankles this can cause premature labor. Deep tissue or vigorous massage methods should be avoided as they can cause stress.

Massage contraindications during pregnancy would include; discharge of blood, suspected or diagnosed eclampsia, gestational diabetes, ruptured amniotic membranes, broken bones, tumors or other acute conditions. You should not receive massage of your doctor has diagnosed you with a high risk pregnancy. Doctors often considered a pregnancy high risk for the following reasons; twins, previous miscarriages.

Pregnancy massage is contraindicated in women who are a high risk for miscarriage, placental abruption or if you are experiencing nauseau or vomitting.

Cervical incompetence is a big one. A history of preterm labor is a small risk as is mulip gestations. The best thing to do is ask your obstrician, especially later in the pregnancy.

Sometimes they massage your belly if they are trying to reposition your baby, or if the baby is breech, which means head up.

If you get your lower back massaged during pregnancy, especially in the first trimester, you run the risk of going into pre-term labor. Otherwise, go for it.
